Dental Fillings

Keep Your Teeth & Enjoy Your Natural Smile

In the past, a tooth that became too damaged would have needed to be extracted. This is one of the worst case scenarios, because our natural teeth are valuable and replacing them can be costly, time-consuming, and involve a long healing process. Conversely, failing to have these teeth extracted could often lead to serious oral health issues such as misalignment and bacterial infections. Today, you don’t have to feel as apprehensive about a damaged tooth, because the talented dentists at East Ridge Dental may be able to repair these teeth with dental fillings.

What Are Dental Fillings?

Dental fillings are materials used to seal and repair damaged teeth, while reinforcing them to help prevent further injury. Common issues fillings can fix include holes, cracks, and cavities. Cavities are caused by bacteria in the mouth that feed on the sugars found in food and drinks, producing acids that attack the teeth. Cavities are often the most common reason dental patients need fillings.

With dental fillings, our dentists can repair and reinforce a damaged tooth, potentially saving it from extraction.  At East Ridge Dental, our dentists offer two kinds of fillings: amalgam (silver) and composite (tooth-colored).

What Are Amalgam Dental Fillings?

Amalgam or silver dental fillings are made up of a mixture of metals which can include silver, zinc, tin, copper, and mercury. Amalgam fillings have been used to repair damaged teeth for hundreds of years. Your dentist may recommend silver fillings if you want a filling with the following traits:

  • Withstands a lot of pressure
  • More effectively fills large cavities
  • Cost-effective

What Are Composite Dental Fillings?

Composite or tooth-colored dental fillings are made from non-metal materials such as quartz, resin, and porcelain. In recent years, composite fillings have become more preferred among dental patients for a number of reasons, some of which include the following:

  • Non-toxic/allergenic
  • Insulated against electric currents (galvanic shock)
  • Require less enamel to be removed
  • Harden almost instantaneously
  • Matches your natural tooth color
  • Don’t stain your teeth over time

Our dentists will work with you to determine which type of filling is right for you based on your unique oral health needs. Regardless of the kind of filling you choose, the installation process is similar for both options.

The Dental Fillings Process

Initial Consultation

Before you can undergo treatment with dental fillings, you’ll undergo a consultation with one of the dentists at East Ridge Dental. During your consultation, your dentist will gather information that will allow them to determine if dental fillings are an effective solution for you. They’ll review your medical history, thoroughly examine your mouth, and ask you about your smile goals. They’ll also discuss our available sedation options with you if you need help staying relaxed during your procedure.

If you and your dentist agree that dental fillings are the right solution to your oral health needs, we’ll schedule you for your next appointment.

Preparation

To prepare your teeth for your dental fillings, we’ll clean them thoroughly so no debris becomes trapped under the filling and potentially cause infection. Next, we’ll apply a local anesthetic so you don’t feel any pain during the procedure. We can also apply your sedative at this time. Once we’re sure you’re comfortable, your dentist will remove any damaged or decayed tooth material to make room for the filling.

Installation

In the case of an amalgam dental filling, your dentist will mold your filling into the opening left by the tooth. In the case of a composite dental filling, your dentist will apply the filling in layers, hardening it with a handheld blue light as they go. Once your filling has completely set, you can start enjoying your restored smile.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a dental filling cost?

The exact cost of your dental filling will depend on a number of factors including the materials used, how many fillings you need, and your insurance. Your dentist will give you a more precise breakdown of costs after your insurance. If you’re concerned about payment, East Ridge Dental is happy to help by offering flexible financing options, including third-party financing through CareCredit.

Are dental fillings painful?

Your comfort is our top priority so we’ll apply a local anesthetic before your dentist begins installing your dental fillings. Once your fillings have been applied, some mild discomfort is normal, but will begin to fade very soon. If you’re experiencing pain that doesn’t go away, please call our Sioux Falls office by dialing (605) 373-0245. We will do everything we can to help alleviate your discomfort and solve any issues you may be having.

How long does numbness last after a dental filling?

The effects of local anesthesia usually wear off after one to three hours. However, the numbness you experience after a dental filling will vary based on a number of factors including your unique physiology and whether or not you underwent sedation. Our dentists recommend that you wait until the numbness has completely passed before eating or drinking anything, especially items that are hot, to avoid injuring your mouth.

How long do dental fillings last?

Silver fillings are built to last 10 to 15 years and composite fillings are built to last an average of five to 10 years. Your fillings will last for a longer time with proper oral hygiene and regular visits to your dentist for exams.

What Are Dental Crowns?

Dental crowns, also called dental caps, are custom-made caps placed over weakened or damaged teeth. Traditional crowns protect and strengthen the tooth while restoring its appearance and function. However, a traditional crown often takes a while to make.

The delay in receiving traditional crowns can leave patients’ teeth exposed to additional harm as they await the production of their conventional crowns. They may have to wear a temporary crown that’s not as suited to their smile to protect the remaining healthy tooth structure.

What Are CEREC Dental Crowns?

CEREC dental crowns, available at East Ridge Dental, represent a state-of-the-art advancement in dental technology. CEREC stands for Chair-side Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramic, a computer-assisted approach to dentistry. CEREC utilizes CAD/CAM or computer-aided design and computer-assisted manufacturing, which involves four-dimensional imaging and an in-office computerized milling machine. These crowns are custom-designed and fabricated during a single appointment.

Benefits of CEREC Dental Crowns

Some of the many benefits of a CEREC crown include:

  • Time Efficiency: Unlike traditional dental crowns, patients can have a CEREC crown designed and placed in one visit, saving time and reducing the need for multiple appointments.
  • Precision Fit: The computer-aided design used to craft a chairside economical restoration ensures a precise, custom fit for each crown, reducing the risk of discomfort or complications.
  • Natural Appearance: CEREC crowns use high-quality materials, providing a natural and aesthetically pleasing look that blends seamlessly with existing teeth.
  • Minimized Discomfort: With the crown being created and placed in one visit, there’s less time for discomfort or sensitivity between appointments.
  • Durable and Long-lasting: CEREC crowns provide a reliable, long-term solution for damaged or weakened teeth.
  • Convenience: Eliminating the need for temporary crowns or multiple trips to your dental professional, CEREC same-day crowns make the process more convenient and hassle-free.
  • Versatile; CEREC dental crowns can be used for the same purposes as traditional dental crowns. This includes topping a dental implant, holding a dental bridge in place, and strengthening weakened tooth tissue after a root canal.

Who Qualifies for CEREC Dental Crowns?

Generally, you may qualify for CEREC crowns if any of the following apply to you:

  • Patients Needing Dental Crowns: Individuals with dental problems such as damaged, weakened, or aesthetically compromised teeth that require crowns are potential candidates.
  • Time-Conscious Patients: Patients who prefer a more time-efficient solution, as CEREC crowns can often be designed and placed in a single appointment.
  • Healthy Teeth and Gums: Good overall oral health, including healthy gums and adjacent teeth, can enhance the success of CEREC crown placement.
  • Dental Anxiety: Patients who prefer fewer dental visits and experience less discomfort or anxiety when dental work is completed in a single session may find CEREC crowns appealing.

The CEREC Crown Procedure

Consultation

Before being approved for a new CEREC dental crown, you’ll attend an initial consultation with one of our East Ridge dentists. During your initial consultation, your dentist will assess your dental health and discuss your needs and goals. This is a critical step to determine if CEREC dental crowns are the right solution for you.

CAD-CAM Design

If you’ve been approved for a new crown made with the CEREC system, we’ll take digital impressions of your teeth with our iTero® ElementTM Intraoral Scanner. The digital impressions are used to create a 3D model of your tooth, allowing for precise design of the same-day crown without the need for messy impression trays. Your dentist will customize the shape and size of the custom crown to ensure a perfect fit and natural appearance.

In-Office Manufacturing

Once the crown design process is finalized, our in-office CEREC machine will mill the custom CEREC crown from a high-quality ceramic block. This process takes place right in the dental office, eliminating the need for a separate off-site lab.

Preparation

Before placing the crown on-site, your dentist will prepare the damaged or weakened tooth. This involves removing any decay, shaping the tooth to accommodate the crown, and ensuring a secure fit.

Placement

The CEREC crown will be ready the same day as your appointment, so you won’t need a temporary crown to protect your tooth. Before final placement, your dentist will check the fit and appearance to ensure it matches your natural teeth perfectly. If the crown meets all quality standards, it is securely bonded to your prepared tooth using dental cement. Your dentist will make any necessary final adjustments and polish the crown to achieve a natural appearance and comfortable bite.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there any specific aftercare or maintenance requirements for CEREC dental crowns?

CEREC dental crowns typically require minimal special care. Maintain good oral hygiene practices to ensure the longevity of your crown. It’s also essential to attend follow-up appointments with your dentist to monitor the crown’s condition.

How long do CEREC dental crowns last in comparison to other types of crowns?

The longevity of CEREC crowns is comparable to other types of crowns. On average, well-maintained CEREC crowns can last anywhere from 10 to 15 years or even longer. However, the actual lifespan of any crown, including CEREC, depends on various factors, such as oral hygiene practices, bite alignment, and the materials used.

Can CEREC crowns be used to replace old crowns or to cover existing dental work?

Yes, CEREC crowns can replace old or damaged traditional crowns. They’re also suitable for covering existing dental work, such as discolored or poorly fitting traditional crowns, to improve both aesthetics and functionality.

Are CEREC crowns covered by insurance?

Coverage for CEREC crowns by insurance can vary depending on your specific dental plan and the reasons for needing the crown. Dental insurance may often cover a portion of the cost, similar to traditional crowns.

Consult your insurance provider or your dentist’s office to determine the extent of coverage and any potential out-of-pocket expenses associated with CEREC crowns.

Root Canals

Save Your Smile With Root Canal Treatment

A damaged tooth doesn’t always need to be pulled. Thanks to advancements in dental technology, a tooth damaged by infection, trauma, or decay may still be saved with root canal treatment. The skilled dentists at East Ridge Dental offer this revolutionary process to save your smile and prevent the need for more costly and invasive treatments down the line.

What Is Root Canal Treatment?

Root canal treatment, also called root canal therapy and endodontics, is a process for completely removing damaged and infected tooth material. Once all the affected material is removed, the tooth is filled with medication and a dental filling, to help prevent future reinfection and hold the tooth’s form. Afterward, your dentist may choose to cover the tooth with a dental crown to further reinforce and restore it to full form and function.

Benefits of Root Canal Treatment

Due to unfortunate stereotypes and rumors about outdated dental practices, certain patients may feel averse to undergoing root canal treatment. However, undergoing root canal treatment when necessary offers significant benefits including:

  • Stops the spread of infection
  • Alleviates pain
  • Saves the tooth from extraction
  • Repairs damage
  • Prevents the need for more costly and invasive procedures in the future
  • Protects your overall oral health

Who Needs Root Canal Treatment?

Root canal treatment is most often performed to address tooth infection. Tooth infection occurs when bacteria from inside your mouth reach the living tissues and nerves inside of your tooth, called the dental pulp. Dental pulp is housed in the pulp chamber, which leads into the root canals where you’ll find the root systems.

Infection usually happens because a cavity has gone untreated for too long. Your dentist may also recommend root canal treatment if your tooth is severely damaged or if you’re dealing with leaking dental fillings. Root canal treatment is most effective when the problem is caught early. Be on the lookout for these common signs which could indicate that you need root canal treatment such as:

  • Toothache pain that extends to the face, neck, or ears
  • Pain while biting and chewing
  • Discomfort due to a chipped or cracked tooth
  • Darkening of an affected tooth or the surrounding gum tissue
  • Painful sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures
  • Swelling and tenderness in your face or gums
  • Persistent or recurring pimples on the gums

If you’re experiencing any of the above symptoms, call East Ridge Dental as soon as possible by dialing (605) 373-0245.

What To Expect From Root Canal Treatment

Initial Consultation

Before you can undergo root canal treatment, you’ll attend an initial consultation with your Sioux Falls dentist. During your consultation, your dentist will evaluate your level of oral health including the extent of any damage, decay, or infection. They’ll also review your medical history, ask you about your smile goals, and offer sedation dentistry if you experience dental anxiety or think you’ll need help relaxing during your procedure. Once your dentist has approved you for root canal treatment, we’ll schedule your next appointment.

Preparation

We’ll prepare you for the procedure by applying a local anesthetic to the soft tissues around the affected tooth. If you chose to undergo sedation, we’ll apply the nitrous oxide sedation beforehand, so you’ll be relaxed before the injection is even applied. Once we’re sure you’re numb, your dentist will proceed.

Root Canal Treatment

Your dentist will use special tools to drill a hole in the top of the tooth. They’ll carefully remove any infected dental pulp, as well as any damaged or decayed tooth material. Once your tooth is completely clean, your dentist will fill the empty root canals and pulp chamber with medication to help eliminate bacteria.

From there, your dentist will add a dental filling to seal the tooth. Depending on your case, your dentist may also recommend installing a dental crown at a later date to better restore the tooth’s form and function.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does root canal treatment cost?

The exact cost of your root canal treatment will vary based on numerous factors such as the extent of the damage, how many teeth require treatment, and your insurance. We encourage you to call your insurance provider beforehand to confirm with them which costs they can cover. If you need help covering the cost of your root canal treatment, we offer financing options and our in-office Smile Savings Plan to help you afford the best dental care available.

Is root canal treatment painful?

Rest assured that at East Ridge Dental, your comfort and safety are our top priorities. To ensure your root canal treatment is as comfortable as possible, we use anesthetic as necessary and even offer sedation dentistry to patients who need it. That way, your root canal treatment will be painless and proceed smoothly.

How soon can I eat after root canal treatment?

You should wait until any anesthetic or sedative has completely worn off before attempting to eat or drink anything, especially if it’s hot. If your mouth is still numb, you risk unknowingly hurting yourself. Your dentist can give you a more accurate estimate of how long it will take for your pain medication to wear off and what to avoid in the meantime.

What can I eat after root canal treatment?

Diet is critical to your healing process after root canal treatment. Generally, for at least one week after your procedure, you’ll need to avoid the following:

  • Spicy foods
  • Crunchy foods
  • Brittle foods
  • Chewy foods
  • Hard foods
  • Alcohol
  • Caffeine
  • Hot drinks
  • Carbonation

Your dentist will give you more specific instructions on which foods and drinks to avoid for what amount of time once your treatment is complete.

Extractions

Painless Tooth Extraction Services

Tooth extraction is a measure that many patients would rather avoid. However, in the right circumstances, extraction can help protect your oral health. Our Sioux Falls tooth extraction dentists provide quick, painless tooth extraction services.

What Is a Tooth Extraction?

Tooth extraction refers to the professional process of safely removing teeth from their sockets. There are two kinds of extractions our Sioux Falls dentists can perform; non-surgical extraction and surgical extraction. A non-surgical or simple extraction involves loosening the tooth, then gently removing the tooth from the gums with forceps. A simple extraction is most commonly used for teeth that have fully erupted or are completely visible above the gum line.

A surgical extraction involves making small incisions in the gums to expose every part of the tooth, so it can be completely removed. A surgical extraction is usually required for an impacted tooth.

An impacted tooth is not fully erupted due to a lack of space in the mouth or other complications. It may be blocked by bone, tissue, or even another tooth. This is most often the case for wisdom teeth issues, which we refer out to an oral surgeon for removal if needed.

The Importance of Tooth Extraction

It’s normal to feel apprehensive about the thought of losing an adult tooth. What’s important to remember for the sake of your oral health is that sometimes a tooth is better off gone. Keeping teeth that are impacted or too damaged to repair increases your risk of:

  • Inflammation
  • Chronic bad breath
  • Infections like periodontal disease
  • Malocclusion (misalignment)
  • Tooth decay in formerly healthy teeth
  • Cysts and oral cancer

Rest assured that our Sioux Falls tooth extraction dentists only want the best for you and your smile. They’ll explore other options and only go forward with extraction if the tooth is unsalvageable.

The Tooth Extraction Process

Initial Consultation

Before your dentist decides to do a tooth extraction, they’ll have you attend an initial consultation. Your initial consultation will consist of a thorough exam, likely including X-rays, to determine the state of your oral health. They’ll also review your medical history with you and ask you about your smile goals.

You can use this time to ask any questions or concerns. For example, if you’re feeling nervous about the prospect of tooth removal, your dentist can offer sedation dentistry options that you can take advantage of during your procedure.

Preparation

If you’ve been approved for tooth extraction, your dentist will start cleaning and disinfecting the extraction site. If you opt for sedation, we’ll apply it at this time. Then, we’ll numb the area around the affected tooth using a local anesthetic. Your dentist will ensure you’re completely numb to any pain before proceeding.

Extraction

For a non-surgical extraction, the affected tooth will be loosened first. Then, it will be gently removed from the socket, usually with a tool called a dental elevator or lifter

For a surgical extraction, an incision will be made into the gum tissue where the rest of the tooth is likely to be located. The gum tissue will then be peeled back to expose the tooth. Your dentist may have to remove some of the bone to reach the entirety of the tooth.

Once every piece of the tooth has been removed, your dentist will take the time to remove any damaged or infected tissue. Then, they’ll disinfect any openings and seal them with sutures.

Aftercare

After tooth extraction, you’ll need to take special care to ensure proper healing. Your East Ridge dentist will provide specific rules for tooth extraction aftercare, which will likely include the following:

  1. Attend follow-up exams.
  2. Avoid strenuous activity for at least 24 hours after your procedure.
  3. Avoid smoking or using tobacco products.
  4. Take any prescribed pain medication and antibiotics as directed.
  5. Gently rinse your mouth using one teaspoon of salt dissolved in eight ounces of warm water or an antimicrobial mouthwash three to four times a day or after you eat.
  6. Avoid vigorous rinsing, spitting, and sucking on straws for the first 72 hours after your procedure. This can dislodge the blood clot and impede healing.
  7. Don’t touch the extraction site when you brush and floss.
  8. Avoid foods and drinks that can irritate your mouth, including items that are spicy, hot, and caffeinated.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does tooth extraction cost?

The exact cost of your tooth extraction will depend on numerous factors including which teeth need an extraction, how many teeth need an extraction, the kind of extraction required, and your insurance. We encourage you to call your insurance provider beforehand to confirm with them which costs they can cover.

For patients who need additional help covering the cost of dental extraction, we can offer flexible financing options, including third-party financing through CareCredit. We also provide an in-office savings plan to help you save more.

Is tooth extraction painful?

Your tooth extraction won’t be painful because we apply local anesthetic during your extraction procedure. We can also offer sedation dentistry options to help you be more comfortable and resistant to pain. For about three days after your tooth extraction, some mild pain or discomfort is normal. Your dentist will prescribe medication to help you control it.

How long does tooth extraction take?

On average, it can take anywhere from 20 to 40 minutes to extract a tooth. The exact length of time will vary from patient to patient. It generally takes longer to perform a surgical extraction than a non-surgical extraction. Additionally, the more teeth need to be extracted, the longer extraction will take. Your dentist will give you a more accurate time estimate during your initial consultation.

Bridges

Restore Your Smile and Improve Oral Health

Your teeth are some of your best assets — helping you communicate, laugh and smile, and eat your favorite foods. Unfortunately, edentulism, or tooth loss, is very common. Losing even one adult tooth can be devastating to your oral health and to your self-confidence. Fortunately, advances in modern dentistry have made restoring these teeth easier than ever. For patients who want a fast, stable restoration, our Sioux Falls dentists offer dental bridges.

What are Dental Bridges?

Dental bridges are fixed prosthetic devices designed to restore the functionality and beauty of your smile. A dental bridge is made of two parts, the row of false teeth called pontics and the tooth-shaped caps on either end of the pontics called dental crowns. The crowns are affixed to the healthy teeth adjacent to the gap left after tooth loss. The pontics are held in place by the crowns, ‘bridging the gap’ left by missing teeth.

Benefits of Dental Bridges

  • Fixed, Sturdy Restoration – Unlike removable dentures, dental bridges are fixed in place, so you won’t have to take them out to clean them or worry about them shifting.
  • Cost-Effective – Dental bridges are an affordable means of restoring your smile.
  • Lifelike Solution – Dental bridges are custom-made to blend seamlessly with your natural teeth.
  • Stable – Dental bridges will remain firmly in place, allowing you to eat, speak, and smile normally.
  • Improved Confidence – When your smile is restored, you’ll likely experience a boost in your appearance, your confidence, and your social interactions.
  • Longevity and Durability – Dental bridges can last 15 to 30 years with proper oral hygiene and regular dental exams.
  • Minimally Invasive – Dental bridges are secured to your healthy teeth with dental crowns, requiring no surgery or lengthy healing times.
  • Prevents Misalignment – Dental bridges help prevent mesial drift, which occurs when your remaining teeth shift towards the space left by your missing teeth.

The Dental Bridge Process

Initial Consultation

Before having a dental bridge installed, your East Ridge Dentist will have you undergo an initial consultation. This consultation will consist of a thorough exam including X-rays. Your dentist will also review your medical history, ask about your smile goals, and discuss your other options. If you have any questions about the procedure, now is a good time. Your dentist can offer sedation dentistry options for the procedure if you’re feeling nervous, scheduled for a long procedure, or resistant to local anesthetic.

Preparation & Design

If you’ve been approved for dental bridges, we’ll apply a local anesthetic to the soft tissues around the two healthy teeth on either side of the space left by the missing teeth. We’ll remove some of the enamel from these teeth to shape them to fit the crowns. Once your teeth are shaped, we take images and X-rays of your smile. These will serve as the blueprints for your new dental bridge.

Placing Your Dental Bridge

Before placing your dental bridge we’ll show it to you to make sure it’s to your liking. Once you’ve approved your restoration, your East Ridge Dentist will check the fit before fixing it in place with dental-grade adhesive. Once your restoration is in place, smile and enjoy!

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a dental bridge cost?

The exact cost of your dental bridge will depend on numerous factors. Common factors that influence costs include the materials used, how many teeth need to be replaced, and your insurance. We encourage you to talk to your dentist about costs and to contact your insurance provider beforehand to ask them which costs they can cover.

How long do dental bridges last?

The standard dental bridge is designed to last 15 years but may last as long as 30 years. The longevity of your dental bridge depends on the materials used to make the bridge and how well you care for your bridge and your oral health. To get the most out of your dental bridge, be sure to brush twice a day, floss once a day (preferably before bedtime), rinse between meals, and visit your dentist at least once every six months for exams.

Which is better, dental implants or dental bridges?

Whether or not dental bridges or dental implants are best for you will depend on your specific case. In some cases, patients who don’t qualify for dental implants will benefit from a dental bridge, because it stays securely in place without surgery and lasts longer than partial dentures. Your dentists will talk to you about your options for smile restoration during your initial consultation.

What should I do if my dental bridge falls out?

If your dental bridge falls out or breaks, do not attempt to fix or reattach it yourself. Doing so can cause damage to your restoration or your smile. Instead, contact your dentist as soon as possible and schedule an appointment. They can fix it or recommend replacements as needed and give you advice on what to do until your appointment.

Visit Your Sioux Falls Dentist For Sturdy Dental Bridges

Your smile doesn’t have to suffer the negative effects of tooth loss anymore. With a simple bridge, you can eat, speak, and smile the way you used to, without breaking the bank or undergoing extensive healing periods.

Dentures & Partials

Easily & Affordably Restore Your Smile

Missing teeth can harm your self-confidence and overall oral health. But thanks to advances in dental technology, dentures and partials can quickly and affordably restore your smile. At East Ridge Dental, our Sioux Falls Restorative dentists offer a range of options for dentures and partials to help you regain your smile and your confidence.

What Are Dentures and Partials?

Dentures and partials, and are removable dental prosthetics designed to replace missing teeth. Dentures, also referred to as complete dentures, are typically used when all of the teeth in a patient’s mouth are missing. Partials or partial dentures are used when some natural teeth remain. While dentures remain in place with the help of suction or adhesive, partials stay in place by hooking onto the healthy teeth adjacent to the gap.

Benefits of Dentures and Partials

  • Improved Appearance: Dentures and partials can fill in gaps and spaces caused by missing teeth, giving you a more natural and youthful appearance.
  • Better Oral Health: Missing teeth can lead to oral health problems such as gum disease and facial sagging. Dentures and partials can help prevent these issues by protecting empty tooth sockets and maintaining the structure of your face.
  • Affordability: Dentures and partials are both highly affordable restorative options for patients across tax brackets.
  • Improved Speech: Missing teeth can affect your ability to speak clearly. Dentures and partials can help you speak more clearly and confidently.
  • Increased Comfort: Modern dentures and partials are designed to be comfortable and easy to wear, with a more secure fit and fewer adjustments needed.
  • Easy Maintenance: Caring for your dentures or partials is simple and doesn’t require much extra work.

The Dentures & Partials Process

At East Ridge Dental, we work closely with each patient to create a personalized treatment plan for dentures or partials. Here are the general steps involved in the process:

Consultation

During your initial consultation, our experienced Sioux Falls dentist will discuss your specific dental needs, treatment goals, and the different denture and partial denture options available to you. Your consultation is an excellent opportunity to ask any questions and address any concerns you may have.

Design

To create your custom dentures or partials, we’ll take detailed measurements and images of your mouth and teeth. These measurements and images are then used to design dentures or partials that fit your mouth and match the color of any natural remaining teeth.

Preparation

If necessary, we may need to extract any remaining teeth before fitting you with dentures. In the case of partials, they’ll fit comfortably in your mouth without any extractions needed.

Fitting

Once your custom dentures or partials are ready, we’ll fit them into your mouth and make any necessary adjustments to ensure a comfortable fit. We’ll also provide you with detailed instructions on how to care for your new dentures or partials to ensure they last as long as possible.

Caring for Dentures and Partials

Proper care is essential to ensure the longevity and effectiveness of your dentures or partials. Your dentist will give you some specific instructions, but here are some common tips for keeping dentures and partials clean and well-maintained:

  1. Remove and rinse dentures or partials after eating to clear away food particles and debris.
  2. Brush your dentures or partials daily with a soft-bristled toothbrush and a non-abrasive denture cleaner to remove plaque and stains.
  3. Soak your dentures or partials in water or denture cleaner solution overnight to keep them moist and prevent warping.
  4. Handle your dentures or partials with care to avoid damaging them; avoid using hot water, harsh chemicals, or abrasive cleaners as these can warp or crack them.
  5. Visit your dentist regularly for check-ups and adjustments to ensure the proper fit and function of your dentures or partials.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will dentures or partials affect my ability to eat and speak?

Dentures and partials take a little getting used to, but most patients can eat and speak normally after a brief adjustment period. If you’re experiencing problems that don’t seem to resolve, it may point to a problem with the fit of your full or partial dentures. See your dentist as soon as possible so they can help.

How long will my dentures or partials last?

On average, dentures and partials can last for seven to ten years with proper care and maintenance. Over time, they may need to be adjusted or replaced as your mouth changes due to factors such as loss of jawbone density.

Can I sleep with my dentures or partials in?

We strongly recommend removing your dentures or partials at night to give your mouth a break and allow your gums to rest. Sleeping with your dentures in can deprive your gums of saliva and lead to irritation and infection.

Can dentures and partials be repaired if they are damaged?

Yes, dentures and partials can often be repaired if they are damaged. It’s important to bring them to a dentist as soon as possible if they are broken or damaged in any way, as delaying repairs could lead to further damage and a more costly repair in the future.

Implant Supported Dentures

Implant-Supported Dentures: The Modern Solution for a Confident Smile

Dental issues can make life difficult, especially when it comes to eating and speaking. Traditional dentures have been a popular solution for missing teeth, but they come with their own set of problems. Denture wearers often complain of discomfort, slippage, and difficulty eating. Luckily, there is a better solution — implant-supported dentures.

At East Ridge Dental, our Sioux Falls, SD, implant dentists are skilled at restoring your smile with this innovative solution. Implant-supported dentures are the perfect choice for patients who want a secure and comfortable fit.

What are Implant-Supported Dentures?

Implant-supported dentures are a type of denture that use dental implants to stay anchored to a patient’s jaw. Dental implants are titanium posts surgically placed into the jawbone. Once the implants are in place, they fuse with the bone over time, creating a strong foundation for the dentures. There are three types of implant-supported dentures.

Bar-Retained Implant-Supported Dentures

Bar-retained implant-supported dentures are also known as “overdentures.” They consist of a thin metal bar attached to the implants that run along the gum line. The denture then clips onto the bar for a secure fit.

Ball-Retained Implant-Supported Dentures

Ball-retained implant-supported dentures, also known as “stud-attachment dentures,” have ball-shaped attachments on the implants that fit into sockets on the denture. The denture snaps onto the implants for a secure fit.

Screw-Retained Implant-Supported Dentures

Screw-retained implant-supported dentures use screws that attach the dentures directly to the implants. This type of denture is the most permanent and stable.

Benefits of Implant-Supported Dentures

Implant-supported dentures offer several benefits over traditional dentures, including:

  • Improved Stability: Implant-supported dentures won’t slip or click while eating, talking, or laughing.
  • Comfort: Unlike traditional dentures, implant-supported dentures don’t put pressure on your gums, reducing the risk of sore spots.
  • Improved Oral Health: Dental implants help maintain bone density, preventing bone loss that can occur with traditional dentures. They can also help keep any remaining teeth from shifting or falling out.
  • Variety: Implant-supported dentures come in removable and non-removable forms, so you can pick the option that best suits you.

Who Qualifies for Implant-Supported Dentures

Implant-supported dentures are a great option for many people, but they may not be right for everyone. Here are some factors to consider:

  • Jawbone Density: You need to have enough jawbone density to support implants. If you’ve experienced bone loss, you may need a bone graft before getting implants.
  • General Health: If you have certain health conditions, like uncontrolled diabetes or heart disease, you may not be a good candidate for implant-supported dentures. It’s important to discuss your medical history with your dentist before undergoing the procedure.
  • Commitment to Oral Hygiene: Implant-supported dentures require regular brushing and flossing, just like natural teeth. If you’re not committed to good oral hygiene, you may be at risk for implant failure.

The Implant-Supported Dentures Process

The process of getting implant-supported dentures typically takes several appointments over several months. Here’s what you can expect:

Initial Consultation

Before getting your new fixed dentures, we’ll have you attend an initial consultation. During your consultation, your East Ridge implant dentist will examine your mouth and take X-rays to determine if you’re a good candidate for implant-supported dentures. Your consultation is a great time to ask any questions or voice any concerns you may have.

Designing Your Dentures

If you’ve been approved for implant-supported dentures, we’ll take images and impressions of your mouth and any remaining teeth. These will serve as the blueprints for your implants and your denture restoration if you need new appliances.

Implant Placement

Before implant placement, we’ll apply a local anesthetic so you’re numb to any pain. We can also provide sedation dentistry options for patients who need extra help staying pain-free or still. Once you’re numb, your East Ridge implant dentist will make small incisions into the gums where the implants will be placed.

Then, they’ll insert the implants into your jawbone through the incisions. You may need to wait several months for the implants to fuse with the bone, a process called osseointegration.

Abutment Placement

Once the implants have fused with the bone, your dentist will place abutments on top of the implants. These pieces attach your denture to the implant.

Denture Placement

Your dentist will take impressions of your mouth and create a custom denture that fits over the abutments. Over a series of follow-up exams, they’ll check your denture fit and make any necessary adjustments.

How to Care for Implant-Supported Dentures

Implant-supported dentures require daily care to maintain their longevity and comfort. Here are some tips for caring for your implant-supported dentures:

  • Brush your dentures twice a day with a soft-bristled brush and non-abrasive toothpaste.
  • Floss daily to remove any food particles or plaque buildup around the abutments.
  • Rinse your mouth with an antiseptic mouthwash to help prevent infection.
  • Visit your dentist regularly for check-ups and cleanings.
  • Avoid hard, sticky, or chewy foods that can damage your dentures or cause them to dislodge.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long do implant-supported dentures last?

The lifespan of implant-supported dentures can vary depending on factors such as the patient’s oral hygiene habits, the quality of the materials used, and the placement of the implants. With proper care, implant-supported dentures can last up to 20 years to a lifetime. However, the restoration itself will likely need to be replaced every 10 years due to normal wear and tear.

Are implant-supported dentures more expensive than traditional dentures?

Yes, implant-supported dentures are typically more expensive than traditional dentures. However, they offer many benefits that can make them worth the investment. The stability and longevity of fixed dentures often exceed the cost of replacing dentures and dealing with the problems they can cause.

Is the implant placement procedure painful?

The implant placement procedure is done while the patient is under local anesthesia, so you shouldn’t feel any pain. After the procedure, you may experience some swelling and discomfort, but this can be managed with over-the-counter pain medication.

Are implant-supported dentures covered by dental insurance?

In most cases, placing implant-supported dentures are considered a restorative dental procedure and may be partially covered by dental insurance. However, coverage can vary depending on the specific insurance plan and the patient’s individual needs. It’s important to check with your insurance provider to understand your coverage options and any out-of-pocket costs that may be associated with the procedure.

Veneers

Porcelain Veneers: One-Step Smile Solution

Your smile plays a huge role in your social interactions and self-esteem. However, if your teeth aren’t looking their best, it may cause people to assume you don’t take care of yourself or your appearance.

Sometimes, it can take multiple restorative and cosmetic treatments to bring your smile up to standard. However, if you don’t have the time for multiple treatments, the dentists at East Ridge Dental offer porcelain dental veneers as a one-treatment solution to multiple cosmetic problems.

What Are Porcelain Veneers?

Porcelain veneers are thin, tooth-shaped shells that our dentists apply to the fronts of your teeth. Once they’re in place, porcelain veneers immediately improve your smile by providing you with the appearance of straight, evenly-spaced white teeth. All it takes for your cosmetic dentist to install your veneers is the painless removal of a minimal amount of enamel (less than the width of a fingernail) before they’re bonded to your natural teeth.

Benefits of Porcelain Veneers

Conceals Cosmetic Flaws – Porcelain veneers conceal cosmetic flaws in your smile including:

  • Cracks
  • Chips
  • Misalignment
  • Discoloration and staining
  • Gaps
  • Crowding

Replace Lost Enamel – Porcelain veneers can help replace missing enamel, helping to combat issues such as staining and dental sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures.

Immediate Improvement – As soon as your veneers are placed, they instantly improve the look of your smile by providing them with a natural-looking appearance.

One Solution for Multiple Issues – Porcelain veneers offer a singular solution for completely transforming your smile.

Improves Teeth That Don’t Respond To Whitening – If you have teeth that won’t respond to whitening, porcelain veneers can conceal them to improve their appearance.

What To Expect From Porcelain Veneers

Initial Consultation

Before you can be approved for porcelain veneers, you’ll need to attend an initial consultation with one of our Sioux Falls cosmetic dentists. During your visit, your dentist will evaluate your oral health, review your medical history, and ask you about your smile goals to determine if this treatment is right for you. If you experience dental anxiety, we also offer sedation dentistry to help you feel relaxed during your procedure.

Designing Your Porcelain Veneers

Once it’s been decided that porcelain veneers are right for you, your cosmetic dentist will take digital images and impressions of your teeth using the iTero® ElementTM Intraoral Scanner. These will serve as the blueprints for your custom-made porcelain dental veneers. Then, we’ll help you choose the right shade of porcelain so that it can match the rest of your natural smile for a flawless look. You’ll return to have your porcelain dental veneers installed once they’re ready.

Preparation

We’ll prepare you for porcelain veneers by thoroughly cleaning your teeth beforehand. Then, your Sioux Falls dentist will remove a minimal amount of enamel from the front of your teeth. This will provide a flat, even surface, that will help your porcelain veneers look natural once they’ve been applied. The enamel removal stage is usually painless, but we can provide anesthetic and sedation if you’re especially sensitive or feeling nervous.

Applying Your Porcelain Dental Veneers

Once your teeth are prepared, your East Ridge dentist will show you your new porcelain dental veneers to make sure they’re to your liking. If your new veneers are to your liking, your dentist will check their fit. Finally, they’ll install your porcelain dental veneers by bonding them to the front surfaces of your teeth with dental grade adhesive. From there, you can immediately start enjoying a better smile.

Maintaining Your Porcelain Dental Veneers

The best part about porcelain veneers is that you can maintain them just like your natural teeth. To get the most out of your dental veneers, our Sioux Falls dentists recommend the following:

  • Attend regular dental exams at East Ridge Dental
  • Practice oral hygiene including brushing, flossing, and rinsing between meals
  • Avoid staining foods and drinks
  • Don’t chew on hard objects, such as ice or your fingernails
  • Avoid tobacco products & limit alcohol use, these substances can stain your veneers and dissolve the adhesive

What To Expect From ZOOM! Teeth Whitening

Initial Consultation

Before you’re approved for ZOOM! teeth whitening, your cosmetic dentist will have you attend an initial consultation. During your initial consultation, your dentist will thoroughly examine your mouth to evaluate your oral health. They’ll also review your medical history and ask you about your smile goals. This is the perfect time to bring up any questions you may have.

Designing Your Take Home Trays

Once your cosmetic dentist has decided ZOOM! teeth whitening will be both safe and effective for you, we’ll take impressions of your teeth. These will be used to design your take-home whitening trays as part of the ZOOM! teeth whitening process.

In-Office ZOOM! Teeth Whitening

To whiten your teeth at our Sioux Falls office, we’ll clean them first to ensure the gel sticks properly. Then, we’ll use methods such as plastic barriers and vitamin e-oil to protect your lips, tongue, and gums. The plastic barriers will help expose all of your teeth for easier whitening. An eye shield may be provided to protect your sight from the LED rays.

Next, we’ll apply the whitening gel to all of your teeth and expose the gel to LED rays for fifteen minutes at a time. We’ll remove and reapply the gel up to three times in fifteen minute intervals, checking with you to see when we achieve your desired shade. Once your in-office ZOOM! teeth whitening session is complete, you’ll be able to start immediately enjoying a new smile.

At-Home ZOOM! Teeth Whitening

To use your at-home ZOOM! teeth whitening trays, clean your teeth beforehand so the gel has a clean surface to stick to. Then, apply the proper amount of whitening gel to the bottom of the entire tray. Apply the trays to the proper rows of teeth and let them sit for the prescribed amount of time.

You can do other things while your whitening gel is working. Remove your trays after the appropriate amount of time has passed and clean your teeth to reveal a whiter smile.

Dental Cleanings (prophylaxis)

Don’t Let Your Smile Suffer: The Power of Preventative Dental Cleanings

Preventative dental care is essential for maintaining a healthy smile. Regular dental cleanings, also known as dental prophylaxis, play a crucial role in maintaining a healthy smile. Performed by a professional dentist, these cleanings are vital for removing buildup, or plaque, from the surfaces of your teeth. If left unaddressed, plaque buildup can lead to cavities, gum disease, and bad breath. At East Ridge Dental, our Sioux Falls preventative dentists and dental team prioritize our patients’ oral health by performing professional cleanings at every exam.

What are Dental Cleanings?

Dental cleanings, or dental prophylaxis, are professional preventative treatments performed by dental hygienists to thoroughly clean the teeth and gums. These cleanings are essential for maintaining good oral health and preventing dental issues such as cavities, gum disease, and bad breath. During a dental cleaning, plaque, tartar, and stains are removed from the teeth, leaving them clean and polished.

Benefits of Dental Cleanings

Regular dental cleanings offer several benefits for your oral health. These include:

  • Prevention of cavities: Dental cleanings remove plaque, which is a sticky film of bacteria that can lead to tooth decay.
  • Prevention of gum disease: Cleanings help remove tartar buildup, which can cause gum inflammation and lead to gum disease.
  • Fresher breath: Removing plaque and tartar helps eliminate the bacteria that cause bad breath.
  • Early detection of dental issues: During cleanings, our dentists can identify early signs of dental problems such as cavities, gum disease, or oral cancer.

What Happens During a Dental Cleaning

During a dental cleaning at our Sioux Falls dental office, several steps are involved to ensure a thorough cleaning of your teeth and gums. Here’s what you can expect:

Plaque and Tartar Removal

The dental hygienist will use specialized tools to carefully remove plaque and tartar from your teeth. This process may involve scraping and scaling to reach areas that are difficult to clean with regular brushing and flossing.

Polishing

After plaque and tartar removal, the dental hygienist will polish your teeth using a gritty toothpaste and a rotating brush or rubber cup. This helps remove surface stains and leaves your teeth smooth and shiny.

Flossing

The dental hygienist will floss between your teeth to remove any remaining plaque or debris. This step ensures that all areas are thoroughly cleaned, including the spaces between your teeth.

Fluoride Treatment

In some cases, a fluoride treatment may be applied to strengthen your tooth enamel and provide additional protection against cavities.

Frequently Asked Questions

It’s generally recommended to have a dental cleaning every six months. However, the frequency may vary depending on your oral health needs. Your dentist will determine the appropriate schedule for your cleanings.

Are dental cleanings painful?

Dental cleanings are typically painless. However, you may experience slight discomfort or sensitivity during the process, especially if you have sensitive teeth or gum disease. Your dental team will ensure your comfort throughout the cleaning.

Can dental cleanings whiten my teeth?

While dental cleanings can remove surface stains, they are not specifically designed for teeth whitening. If you’re interested in teeth whitening, discuss your options with your dentist.

Are dental cleanings covered by insurance?

Many dental insurance plans cover dental cleanings as part of preventive care. However, coverage may vary depending on your specific plan. Your dentist’s financial team can assist you in understanding your insurance coverage.

Digital radiography allows us to use digital sensors to capture images of your teeth and surrounding structures such and your roots, bone, joints and certain abnormalities that don’t present themselves clinically. They are time-efficient and allow us to visually share the information we find with the patient. The different types of x-rays we take include:

  • Bitewings- these images allow us to see between the teeth, exposing any decay as well being able to see the bone level around each tooth. They are used to capture the pre-molars and molars.
  • Periapicals (Pas)- these images allow us to see the full length of the tooth from the top of the crown to the tip of the root. It exposes all the structures around each tooth and allows us to see if there are any abscesses or abnormalities around the root.
  • Panoramic- this image provides a two-dimensional view of everything in your upper and lower jaw from ear to ear.
  • Cephalometric- this image allows the dentist to see the whole side of the face. The most common use for a ceph is during orthodontic care.

Sealants

Easily & Affordably Protect Your Smile

When it comes to your oral health, preventative measures often stand as strong barriers against dental issues. Among these measures, dental sealants emerge as a commendable solution, safeguarding teeth against decay and plaque. Our Sioux Falls preventative dentists at East Ridge Dental offer dental sealants to patients across all age groups. Learn about this simple completely non-invasive dental protection method by reading the guide below.

What Are Dental Sealants?

Dental sealants are wafer-thin plastic coatings applied onto the chewing surfaces of the molars and premolars – the back teeth. Serving as an effective barrier, these sealants shield teeth from decay and plaque by filling in the crevices and pits where bacteria tend to accumulate and wreak havoc.

Benefits of Dental Sealants

The benefits of dental sealants extend far beyond their protective nature:

  • Defense Against Tooth Decay and Plaque: Dental sealants defend teeth against tooth decay and plaque buildup, significantly reducing the chances of cavities. According to a study conducted for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, sealants can prevent up to 80 percent of cavities over two years.
  • Durable Guardians: With proper care, dental sealants can remain steadfast for several years, providing long-lasting protection.
  • Painless and Safe: The process of applying dental sealants is a safe and painless one, causing minimal discomfort, if any.
  • Cost-Effective: When compared to the expenses associated with extensive restorative treatments, dental sealants are a highly cost-effective preventive measure, potentially saving patients from more invasive procedures down the line.

Who Qualifies for Dental Sealants?

  • Children and teenagers are the primary candidates for dental sealants, especially upon the eruption of their permanent molars and premolars.
  • Adults with deep grooves and pits in their teeth may also benefit from dental sealants.
  • Anyone prone to tooth decay on their back teeth should consider sealants.
  • In general, children should get sealants on their permanent molars and premolars as soon as these teeth come in.

The Dental Sealant Process

Consultation

The initial step involves an in-depth consultation with one of our East Ridge preventative dentists. An assessment of your teeth helps in determining the suitability of dental sealants for your specific oral health needs.

Preparation

Before sealant application, your teeth undergo thorough cleaning and drying. A slightly acidic solution is then applied to the chewing surfaces, promoting a strong bond between the sealant and the teeth.

Placement

Once the teeth are primed, we’ll apply and solidify the dental sealant with the aid of a special light. This swift and virtually painless process takes only a matter of minutes per tooth.

Caring for Your Dental Sealants

To maximize the efficacy and longevity of dental sealants, it’s important to adhere to a few guidelines:

  • Oral Hygiene: Maintain a disciplined oral hygiene routine, including regular brushing and flossing to ensure the sealants are well-preserved.
  • Mindful Munching: Be cautious while chewing on hard or sticky foods, as exerting excessive pressure can potentially damage the sealants.
  • Routine Check-Ups: Schedule periodic visits to East Ridge Dental for comprehensive check-ups and professional cleanings. This proactive approach ensures that your sealants are examined and any necessary replacements are recommended promptly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are dental sealants covered by insurance?

Many dental insurance plans extend coverage for dental sealants among children and teenagers. It’s important to contact your insurance provider to ascertain the extent of coverage. Ask your dental office if they provide in-house financing plans to help pay for your treatment without worry.

How long do dental sealants last?

With appropriate care, dental sealants can last for several years. Your preventative dentist should keep a watchful eye on the condition of your sealants during routine check-ups, proposing replacements as deemed necessary.

Are dental sealants safe?

Absolutely! Dental sealants have an established track record of safety. These protective shields have stood the test of time, offering reliable defense against decay and plaque.

Is the placement of dental sealants painful?

Rest assured, the placement of dental sealants is an almost painless procedure, consuming just a few minutes per tooth. Minimal discomfort, if any, is the norm.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to get used to wearing an oral appliance?

The adjustment period for wearing an oral appliance varies from person to person. It may take a few days to a few weeks to get accustomed to wearing the appliance while sleeping. Our team will provide guidance and support throughout the adjustment process, ensuring your comfort and addressing any concerns you may have.

Can I wear my oral appliance during the day?

While some oral appliances are designed to be worn only during sleep, others can be worn during the day as well. The specific instructions for wearing your oral appliance will be provided by your dentist, depending on the type of appliance and your dental condition.

How do I clean and maintain my oral appliance?

Proper cleaning and maintenance are essential to ensure the longevity and hygiene of your oral appliance. Rinse the appliance with water after each use and brush it gently with a toothbrush and mild soap. Avoid using hot water or abrasive cleaners that may damage the appliance. Regularly bring your oral appliance to your dental check-ups so our team can inspect and clean it professionally.

Can I use over-the-counter oral appliances instead of custom-made ones?

Over-the-counter oral appliances may be available; however, they are not custom-fitted to your mouth and may not provide the same level of comfort and effectiveness as a professionally made appliance. Periodontal Disease

Shedding Light on Periodontal Disease

What oral disease is highly common, easy to miss, sometimes painless, and also poses a great risk to your oral health? Periodontal disease, also known as gum disease affects a significant number of individuals, often without them even realizing it. In this helpful guide, the Sioux Falls, SD dentists at East Ridge Dental will explain periodontal disease including its signs and symptoms, and discuss how it impacts both your oral and overall health.

What is Periodontal Disease?

Periodontal disease is a chronic inflammatory condition that affects the gums and supporting structures of the teeth. It progresses in stages, each with its distinct characteristics and potential consequences. Understanding these stages is crucial to recognizing the condition’s onset and seeking timely treatment.

Stages of Periodontal Disease

Stage 1: Gingivitis

Gingivitis marks the earliest stage of periodontal disease. It is characterized by inflammation of the gum tissues surrounding the teeth. The common culprits behind this stage are bacterial plaque and poor oral hygiene. If not addressed promptly, gingivitis can progress to more severe forms of gum disease.

Stage 2: Early Periodontitis

As periodontal disease advances, it enters the stage of early periodontitis. At this point, the infection spreads beneath the gum line, affecting the bone and connective tissues that support the teeth. Signs of early periodontitis may include gum recession, increased sensitivity, persistent bad breath, and the formation of deep pockets between the gums and teeth.

Stage 3: Moderate Periodontitis

Moderate periodontitis is a critical stage where the damage becomes more pronounced. The infection progresses further, leading to a significant loss of bone and connective tissues. Individuals with moderate periodontitis may experience loose teeth, changes in bite alignment, increased tooth sensitivity, and further gum recession.

Stage 4: Advanced Periodontitis

At the advanced stage of periodontal disease, significant damage has occurred, leaving teeth highly compromised. Tooth mobility and tooth loss are common symptoms. Other potential consequences include changes in facial structure, difficulty chewing, chronic pain, and a negative impact on overall health.

Common Causes of Periodontal Disease

Periodontal disease can have various underlying causes, beyond just plaque buildup. Understanding these factors can help you take proactive steps in preventing gum disease. Here are some common causes:

Plaque and Tartar

The primary cause of gum disease is the accumulation of plaque and tartar on the teeth and gum line. Plaque is a sticky film of bacteria that forms constantly, and if not properly removed, it hardens into tartar, leading to gum inflammation.

Genetics

Some individuals may be genetically predisposed to developing gum disease. Certain genetic variations can make them more susceptible to the condition, even with excellent oral hygiene practices.

Tobacco Use

Smoking or using tobacco products significantly increases the risk of gum disease. Tobacco weakens the immune system, impairs blood flow to the gums, and hinders the healing process, making smokers more prone to periodontal issues.

Poor Oral Hygiene

Inadequate oral hygiene habits, such as infrequent brushing, inconsistent flossing, and neglecting regular dental check-ups, contribute to the development of gum disease. These practices allow plaque and bacteria to accumulate and thrive.

Hormonal Changes

Hormonal fluctuations in women, such as during puberty, pregnancy, and menopause, can make the gums more susceptible to inflammation and increase the risk of gum disease.

Chronic Illnesses

Certain systemic conditions, such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and immune disorders, can compromise gum health and make individuals more vulnerable to periodontal disease.

Medications

Some medications, such as certain anticonvulsants, immunosuppressants, and oral contraceptives, may have side effects that impact gum health and increase the risk of gum disease.

Poor Nutrition

A diet lacking essential nutrients, particularly vitamin C, can weaken the immune system and hinder the body’s ability to fight off infections, including gum disease.

Understanding these causes can help you identify potential risk factors and take appropriate measures to maintain healthy gums. Practicing good oral hygiene, avoiding tobacco use, and visiting your dentist regularly are essential steps in preventing periodontal disease.

Signs and Symptoms of Periodontal Disease

Early detection of periodontal disease is crucial for effective treatment and preventing further complications. By recognizing the signs and symptoms, you can take prompt action and seek professional dental care. Here are some common indications of periodontal disease:

  • Gums That Bleed Easily: If your gums bleed during brushing, flossing, or even eating, it could be an early sign of gum disease.
  • Persistent Bad Breath: Bad breath that doesn’t improve even with proper oral hygiene may indicate an underlying gum infection.
  • Receding Gum Line: As the disease progresses, the gums may recede, making the teeth appear longer than before.
  • Swollen or Tender Gums: Inflamed gums that are sensitive to touch can be a sign of gum disease.
  • Pain or Discomfort: Periodontal disease may cause pain or discomfort while chewing, speaking, or even at rest.
  • Loose or Shifting Teeth: As the supporting structures of the teeth weaken due to periodontal disease, teeth may become loose or shift position.
  • Changes in Bite Alignment: If you notice changes in the way your teeth fit together when biting or chewing, it could be a result of gum disease affecting the stability of the teeth.
  • Gum Recession: Receding gums expose the tooth roots, making them more vulnerable to sensitivity and decay. It is a common symptom of periodontal disease.
  • Pus Between Teeth and Gums: The presence of pus or discharge between teeth and gums is a sign of infection and requires immediate dental attention.
  • Deep pockets: Periodontal disease causes the formation of deep pockets between the gums and teeth, indicating the progression of the condition.

Remember, even if you experience only one or two of these symptoms, it is essential to consult your East Ridge dentist for a thorough evaluation and appropriate treatment.

Consequences of Untreated Gum Disease

Untreated gum disease can have significant consequences for your oral health and overall well-being. Some of the possible consequences of untreated gum disease include:

Loss of Supporting Bone

Advanced periodontal disease can lead to a condition known as bone resorption. This means the bone supporting and anchoring the teeth starts to deteriorate and diminish in volume. As a result, the teeth lose their stable foundation, become loose, and are at a higher risk of eventual tooth loss.

Tooth Loss

As the bone supporting the teeth weakens due to gum disease, the teeth can become increasingly mobile or loose. Without timely intervention, this can eventually lead to tooth loss. Losing teeth not only affects your smile’s appearance but also impacts your ability to chew and speak properly.

Root Exposure

Gum disease can cause the gums to recede, exposing the sensitive tooth roots. This not only leads to increased tooth sensitivity but also makes the teeth more susceptible to decay and other dental problems.

Oral Infections and Abscesses

Untreated gum disease provides a breeding ground for harmful bacteria. These bacteria can cause oral infections, leading to the formation of painful abscesses. Oral infections can be challenging to treat and may require invasive procedures, such as root canal therapy or tooth extraction.

Impaired Overall Health

Periodontal disease may increase the risk of cardiovascular problems, such as heart attacks and strokes. It can also complicate the management of diabetes, as high blood sugar levels can worsen gum disease and vice versa. Furthermore, gum infections can potentially travel through the bloodstream and contribute to respiratory infections or pose risks during pregnancy.

For reasons such as these, it’s essential to recognize the signs of gum disease early on and seek professional treatments such as periodontal maintenance and scaling and root planing. Taking action as soon as the disease is detected helps to prevent these potential consequences and protect your oral and overall health.

Frequently Asked Questions

How common is periodontal disease?

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), nearly half of adults aged 30 and older in the United States have some form of gum disease.

Can I prevent periodontal disease?

Yes, adopting a proactive approach to oral hygiene can significantly reduce the risk of developing gum disease. Regular brushing, flossing, and routine dental check-ups are essential. Additionally, avoiding tobacco use, maintaining a healthy diet, and managing stress contribute to gum health.

Can periodontal disease be reversed?

While gum disease is a chronic condition, early stages, such as gingivitis, can be reversed with proper treatment and improved oral hygiene practices. However, advanced stages of periodontal disease can’t be reversed and may require more extensive interventions to manage the condition effectively.

Is gum disease contagious?

The bacteria responsible for gum disease can be transmitted through saliva, such as when sharing utensils, kissing, or engaging in intimate contact. This means if someone with gum disease has poor oral hygiene habits, their bacteria-rich saliva can potentially contribute to an increased risk of gum disease in others. It is crucial to maintain good oral hygiene practices, including regular brushing, flossing, and dental check-ups, to minimize the risk of gum disease transmission.

Scaling & Root Planing

Enjoy a Healthier Smile With Scaling and Root Planing

If you suffer from gum disease and it’s been a while since your last cleaning, your smile may need more intensive care. Fortunately, at East Ridge Dental, even if it’s been a while since your last cleaning, our Sioux Falls dentists can improve the health of your gums with root planing and scaling. Call us at (605) 373-0245 to learn about the many benefits of this treatment, or keep reading our helpful guide below.

What is Scaling and Root Planing?

Scaling and root planing, also known as dental deep cleaning, scaling and teeth planing, or root planing and periodontal scaling, is a dual treatment meant to remove excess plaque and tartar from the teeth and below the gum lines. During the scaling phase, excess bacterial build-up is removed from around the teeth and gums using special tools. During root planing, the roots are smoothed to get rid of pockets where bacteria have grown and discourage future bacterial growth.

Benefits of Scaling and Root Planing

Scaling and root planing offers a range of significant benefits for patients who are dealing with these conditions:

  • Gum Disease Management: Scaling and root planing are highly effective in managing gum disease. By removing plaque and tartar buildup, as well as smoothing the tooth roots, this treatment helps prevent the progression of gum disease to more severe periodontal disease stages.
  • Halting Tooth Mobility: In cases where gum disease has caused tooth mobility, scaling and root planing can stabilize the affected teeth. It reduces the risk of tooth loss and can often improve the overall health of the affected teeth and gums.
  • Preventing Tooth Loss: One of the primary benefits of scaling and root planing is its ability to prevent tooth loss due to advanced periodontal disease. By addressing the infection and inflammation in the gums, this treatment can help save teeth that might otherwise be at risk of extraction.
  • Reducing Gum Inflammation: Scaling and root planing effectively reduce gum inflammation, making it an essential component of managing periodontal disease. This can lead to improved gum health, a reduction in gum bleeding, and enhanced overall comfort.
  • Preventing Recurrence: Scaling and root planing not only treat existing gum disease but also help prevent its recurrence. Thoroughly cleaning and removing bacteria and toxins from the root surfaces stops gum infections from returning, allowing patients to maintain healthier gums.
  • Enhancing Overall Oral Health: Addressing gum disease through scaling and root planing contributes to improved overall oral health. Healthy gums are essential for maintaining strong teeth and a beautiful smile. They also support the long-term success of dental restorations like crowns, bridges, and dental implants.
  • Reducing Bad Breath (Halitosis): Gum disease can contribute to bad breath. By effectively treating and managing gum disease, scaling and root planing can significantly improve oral hygiene and combat halitosis.
  • Minimally Invasive: Scaling and root planing is a non-surgical, minimally invasive procedure. It typically doesn’t require anesthesia, making it a comfortable and accessible treatment option for patients.
  • Cost-Effective: When compared to more advanced treatments like gum surgery, scaling and root planing is often a cost-effective approach to managing gum disease.
  • Improved Aesthetics: As gum disease is managed, patients often experience improved gum aesthetics. Healthy gums have a pink, firm appearance, enhancing the overall look of their smile.

The Scaling and Root Planing Process

Consultation

Before undergoing root planing and scaling, you’ll have a consultation with one of our East Ridge dentists. During this initial appointment, they’ll evaluate your oral health, assess the severity of your gum disease, and discuss your treatment options.

They’ll ask about your medical history, any medications you take, and symptoms you may be experiencing, such as bleeding gums or bad breath. This consultation is essential to determine whether root planing and teeth scaling up is the right treatment for you.

Preparation

Once we’ve determined that root planing and scaling is the appropriate treatment, we’ll schedule an appointment for the root planing and scaling procedure. Before the root planing and scaling treatment, local anesthesia will numb the treatment area, ensuring you’re as comfortable as possible.

Scaling

Scaling is the first part of the procedure, and it involves removing plaque and tartar (calculus) from the surfaces of your teeth, and both above the gum line and below the gumline. Dental instruments, such as scalers and ultrasonic devices, carefully and thoroughly remove these deposits. The scaling process is vital for eliminating the source of infection and preventing its progression.

Root Planing

After scaling, the next step is root planing. This process involves smoothing the root surfaces of your teeth to remove any remaining bacteria and rough spots where bacteria can easily accumulate. Root planing helps the gums reattach to the teeth and promotes a healthier, cleaner oral environment. Our dentist or dental hygienist will use specialized instruments to access and clean the roots of the teeth, ensuring a thorough removal of debris and bacteria.

Follow-Up and Maintenance

After root planing and periodontal scaling, your oral healthcare provider will discuss post-treatment care and maintenance with you. This involves instructions for maintaining good oral hygiene at home, including regular brushing and flossing as well as recommendations for any additional treatments or follow-up appointments. We may schedule further periodontal maintenance appointments to monitor your progress and ensure a successful treatment.

Scaling and Root Planing Aftercare

Taking care of your gums after your root planing treatment and scaling is vital to your oral health and treatment success. Here are some common guidelines to follow post-treatment:

  • Regular Oral Hygiene: Brush your teeth at least twice a day and floss daily to maintain good oral hygiene.
  • Use Antibacterial Rinse: Your dentist may recommend using an antibacterial mouthwash to help reduce bacteria in your mouth.
  • Avoid Tobacco: If you smoke or use tobacco products, it’s advisable to quit or at least reduce your use, as tobacco can hinder the healing process.
  • Watch Your Diet: Consume a balanced diet that’s low in sugary and acidic foods to promote gum health.
  • Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water to keep your mouth moist and to help healing.
  • Attend Follow-Up Appointments: Keep your scheduled appointments for periodontal maintenance and check-ups to monitor your progress.
  • Medications: If prescribed antibiotics or other medications, take them as directed by your dentist.
  • Monitor Healing: Pay attention to any signs of infection, unusual pain, or persistent bleeding, and promptly contact your dentist if you have concerns.
  • Avoid Stress: Stress can affect your immune system, so try to manage stress through relaxation techniques.
  • Quit Smoking: If you smoke, consider quitting or at least reducing your tobacco use, as smoking can interfere with the healing process and exacerbate gum disease.
  • Nutrition: Maintaining a balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables and low in sugary or acidic foods can help support gum health.
  • Stay Hydrated: Drinking plenty of water can help keep your mouth moist and promote healing.
  • Regular Check-Ups: Continue to see our dentists for regular check-ups and periodontal maintenance appointments to ensure the ongoing health of your gums and teeth.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is root planing and scaling a painful procedure?

Local anesthesia is typically used during root planing and scaling, which helps minimize discomfort. You may experience some mild soreness or sensitivity after the procedure, but this should subside within a day.

How long does the root planing and scaling procedure take?

The duration of the procedure depends on the extent of gum disease and the number of teeth being treated. In many cases, it can be completed in a few days with one or two appointments, with each session lasting about 45 minutes to an hour.

Are there any side effects or risks associated with root planing and scaling?

While root planing and teeth scaling are safe procedures, some potential side effects may include temporary sensitivity, bleeding gums, loose teeth, and minor swelling. These side effects are typically short-lived and can be managed with proper aftercare.

Is root planing and scaling covered by insurance?

Dental insurance coverage for root planing and scaling varies by plan. Many plans cover it when deemed medically necessary for treating gum disease, but the extent of coverage varies. Patients may need preauthorization and could be responsible for copayments or deductibles.

To understand your specific coverage, contact your insurance provider, check if your dentist is in-network, and review your policy documents. Your dentist’s office can also assist with the insurance claim process.

Periodontal Maintenance

Constant Care for a Healthier Smile

If you’ve been previously diagnosed with gum disease, it’s vital to keep your symptoms under control. Unchecked gum disease can lead to oral and systemic health issues such as tooth loss, diabetes, and heart disease. Let the Sioux Falls dentists of East Ridge Dental keep your symptoms under control and smile as healthy as possible with periodontal maintenance. Schedule your periodontal maintenance appointment by dialing (605) 373-0245.

What Is Periodontal Maintenance?

Periodontal maintenance refers to ongoing professional dental care and at-home practices aimed at managing and preventing the progression of periodontal (gum) disease. This specialized form of dental maintenance is typically prescribed for individuals who have previously undergone treatment for gum disease, such as scaling and root planing or periodontal surgery.

Benefits of Periodontal Maintenance

Periodontal maintenance offers a range of benefits for individuals with a history of gum disease, supporting their ongoing oral health and well-being. Here are the key advantages:

  • Disease Management: Periodontal maintenance is crucial for managing and controlling gum disease. Regular professional cleanings and evaluations help prevent the progression of periodontal conditions, reducing the risk of complications.
  • Prevention of Disease Progression: By addressing emerging issues promptly, periodontal maintenance helps prevent the recurrence or worsening of gum disease. This proactive approach contributes to the long-term stability of the periodontal tissues.

  • Preservation of Supporting Structures: Gum disease can lead to the loss of supporting structures, including bone. Regular maintenance helps preserve these structures by minimizing inflammation and infection, supporting the stability of teeth in the jaw.
  • Reduced Risk of Tooth Loss: Through effective management of gum disease, periodontal maintenance reduces the risk of tooth loss. It helps maintain the integrity of the periodontal ligaments and prevents the advanced stages of periodontitis that can lead to tooth mobility and extraction.
  • Optimal Oral Health: Periodontal maintenance contributes to overall oral health by addressing gum disease and preventing complications. It complements other oral hygiene practices and promotes a healthier oral environment.
  • Increased Longevity of Dental Treatments: For individuals who have undergone periodontal treatments such as scaling and root planing or periodontal surgery, regular maintenance ensures the longevity and effectiveness of these interventions.
  • Early Detection of Issues: Regular check-ups during periodontal maintenance appointments allow for the early detection of emerging issues. This timely identification enables prompt intervention and minimizes the need for more extensive and invasive treatments.
  • Individualized Oral Hygiene Instruction: Periodontal maintenance includes personalized oral hygiene instructions. Patients receive guidance on effective home care practices tailored to their specific needs, enhancing their ability to maintain oral health between professional visits.
  • Improvement in Systemic Health: Research suggests a link between periodontal health and systemic conditions such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes. By managing gum disease, periodontal maintenance may contribute to overall health and well-being.
  • Enhanced Aesthetics: Healthy gums contribute to a pleasing smile. Periodontal maintenance supports gum health, ensuring your gums remain pink, firm, and aesthetically pleasing.
  • Prevention of Recurrence: Periodontal maintenance helps prevent the recurrence of gum disease by addressing risk factors, providing ongoing care, and promoting patient education. This reduces the likelihood of experiencing further episodes of periodontal issues.

What’s Involved in Periodontal Maintenance?

Regular Dental Cleanings

Periodontal maintenance involves more frequent dental cleanings than routine cleanings. These cleanings are usually scheduled every three to four months and are performed by a dental hygienist.

Comprehensive Dental Exams

During periodontal maintenance visits, the dentist conducts thorough examinations of the gums, teeth, and supporting structures to monitor the health of the periodontal tissues.

Pocket Depth Measurement

Your East Ridge dentist or hygienist measures the depth of the spaces (pockets) between the teeth and gums. Monitoring changes in pocket depth helps assess the stability or progression of gum disease.

Scaling and Root Planing as Needed

If there are areas of persistent inflammation or signs of disease progression, scaling and root planing (deep cleaning) may be performed during periodontal maintenance visits to remove accumulated plaque and tartar.

Oral Hygiene Instruction

You’ll receive personalized guidance on effective oral hygiene practices at home, including proper brushing, flossing, and, if necessary, the use of adjunctive tools like antimicrobial mouthwashes or interdental brushes.

Monitoring Overall Oral Health

Periodontal maintenance appointments provide an opportunity for our dentists to assess the overall oral health, identify any emerging issues, and address concerns promptly.

Risk Assessment

Your dentist will evaluate factors that may contribute to the risk of gum disease, such as smoking, medical conditions, or genetic predisposition, and develop a tailored maintenance plan.

Prevention of Disease Progression

The primary goal of periodontal maintenance is to prevent the recurrence or progression of gum disease. Consistent professional care and diligent home oral hygiene play crucial roles in achieving this objective.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my dental insurance cover periodontal maintenance?

The coverage for periodontal maintenance varies among dental insurance plans. Some plans may cover a portion of the cost, while others may have specific limitations or requirements. It’s recommended to check with your dental insurance provider to understand your coverage and any potential out-of-pocket expenses associated with periodontal maintenance.

Can periodontal maintenance prevent tooth loss?

Yes, one of the primary benefits of periodontal maintenance is its role in preventing tooth loss. By effectively managing gum disease, maintaining the integrity of supporting structures, and addressing issues promptly, this maintenance contributes to the long-term stability of teeth and reduces the risk of extraction.

Can I skip periodontal maintenance if my gums feel fine?

Even if your gums feel fine, skipping periodontal maintenance is not advisable. Gum disease can be asymptomatic in its early stages, and regular maintenance is essential for preventing disease progression. Early detection and intervention during maintenance visits contribute to optimal oral health.

How often should I undergo periodontal maintenance?

The frequency of periodontal maintenance visits varies depending on the individual’s specific needs and the severity of their gum disease. In general, these appointments are scheduled every three to four months to ensure proactive management and early detection of any emerging issues.

This means there is less damage and pain caused to surrounding tissues. Additionally, laser dentistry is often less invasive than traditional procedures, resulting in reduced bleeding and a decreased need for anesthesia.

Is laser dentistry more expensive?

Invisalign®

The Importance of Orthodontics

It’s likely that your teeth didn’t grow perfectly straight and that’s perfectly normal. However, too much malocclusion (also known as dental misalignment) can make it much harder to care for your smile. Misaligned teeth are more vulnerable to inflammation, infection, further misalignment, decay, and other oral health issues.

For reasons such as these, orthodontic treatment may be a necessity, but who’s eager to endure the discomfort, glaring appearance, and long treatment times that come with traditional metal braces? Fortunately for patients in need of orthodontic treatment, the cosmetic dentists at East Ridge Dental can offer an alternative with Invisalign orthodontics.

Matt’s Invisalign story:

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is an orthodontic treatment system that makes use of clear aligner trays instead of intrusive metal brackets and wires. Made with patented SmartTrack® material, these clear aligners are strong enough to reposition your teeth over time. However, unlike traditional metal braces, Invisalign aligner trays come with the convenience of being almost completely transparent and easy to put on and take off on your own.

Benefits of Invisalign Orthodontics

Versatile Treatment: Invisalign orthodontics can be used to treat many of the same misalignment issues as traditional braces including:

  • Overbite
  • Underbite
  • Crooked Teeth
  • Gaps
  • Crowding
  • Crossbite

Comfortable: Patented SmartTrack material is comfortable and easy to wear for hours on end. Most of the time you won’t even realize that you’re wearing your aligners.

Removable: Being able to remove your aligner trays allows you to easily clean them, store them, and eat what you want.

Quick: The average length of treatment time with Invisalign clear aligners is six months to one year, half the average time of traditional metal braces.

Convenient: Since your Invisalign aligner trays are easily removable and don’t have any metal brackets or wires for your Invisalign provider to adjust, this cuts down on the number of dental visits necessary to keep your treatment on track.

Invisalign Vs. Braces

It’s common for patients to ask, “Which is better, Invisalign or braces?” While Invisalign offers unparalleled comfort and fast, discreet treatment, it may not be the right option for you. You may prefer or benefit more from metal braces if:

  • You have severe malocclusion
  • You don’t think you’ll remember to put your Invisalign trays back in after taking them out
  • You‘ve had previous orthodontic treatments
  • You’re prone to losing or misplacing small objects

Your Invisalign provider will discuss all of your options with you during your initial consultation, and give you their opinion on which treatment they think is best.

Treatment With Invisalign Orthodontics

Initial Consultation

Before your Invisalign dentist approves you for treatment, they’ll have you attend an initial consultation. During this visit, your dentist will thoroughly examine your mouth to evaluate your oral health. They’ll also review your medical history and ask you about your smile goals. This is the perfect time to bring up any questions you may have.

Designing Your Invisalign Clear Aligner Trays

If you’re approved for Invisalign orthodontics, then we’ll take digital images and impressions of your teeth. These will be sent to an offsite Invisalign-owned laboratory and used as the blueprints for your aligner trays. You’ll return to our Sioux Falls dental office when your Invisalign trays are ready.

Your Invisalign Orthodontic Treatment

When you return for your Invisalign orthodontic treatment trays, your cosmetic dentist will check to see if they fit. Putting them on will be a simple matter of gently popping them over your teeth. If your aligner trays fit the way they should, your Invisalign provider will send you home with your first couple of sets so you can begin your journey to a straighter smile.

Wearing Your Invisalign Clear Aligners

In order for your Invisalign orthodontic treatment to be effective, you’ll need to wear each set of aligner trays for a minimum of 22 hours a day. On average, each set of trays will be worn for two to four weeks, until you’ve worn each set in the series in the proper order. By the time you’re finished wearing all of them, your Invisalign treatment should be complete.

The only time it’s necessary to remove your aligners is when you eat, drink fluids other than cool water, and practice your oral hygiene habits. Be sure to store your Invisalign trays in a clean, easy-to-remember place like their carrying case, so you can put them back in as soon as you can.

Post Invisalign Retainers

Depending on your case, Invisalign treatment may not be where your journey to a straighter smile ends. To help prevent orthodontic relapse, your Invisalign provider may provide retainers, such as the Vivera™ retainer at a later date.

Orthodontic relapse occurs because the ligaments that hold your teeth remember their original positions and need time to get used to their new ones. Wearing your retainers after Invisalign treatment for the amount of time prescribed by your Invisalign provider will help your teeth permanently adjust to their new places. It also helps prevent the need for orthodontic retreatment at a later date.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does Invisalign orthodontic treatment cost?

The exact cost of your Invisalign orthodontic treatment will depend on many factors including the severity of your misalignment, how many Invisalign trays you require, and your insurance. Your Invisalign provider and the rest of the staff at East Ridge Dental strongly encourage you to contact your insurance provider beforehand to get a better understanding of your coverage.

We’re eager to see all of our patients enjoy straighter, healthier smiles, so we can help alleviate some of the cost of your Invisalign treatment by offering flexible financing options. We also proudly offer our Smile Savings Plan, an in-office subscription that gives patients a more convenient way to afford their dental care.

How do I clean my Invisalign trays?

Taking proper care of your Invisalign aligner trays is essential to keeping your treatment on track. To care for your aligner trays, your Invisalign provider recommends following these instructions:

  1. Remove your aligner trays before you eat, drink fluids other than water, and clean your teeth.
  2. Use lukewarm water, a soft-bristled toothbrush, and a gentle, unscented antibacterial soap or toothpaste to clean your trays.
  3. Store your aligners in their protective case while you’re not wearing them.
  4. Soak your aligner trays at least once a day in a mix of three parts lukewarm water and one part white distilled vinegar or Invisalign cleaning crystals
  5. Rinse your aligners before putting them back in your mouth.
  6. Remove your aligners from back to front to avoid tearing them.

Does Invisalign hurt?

In the first few days of wearing each set of Invisalign aligner trays, you may feel some mild discomfort. That’s usually just a sign of the treatment maneuvering your teeth into their proper places. If the feeling is unbearable or isn’t going away, it may point to a problem. In that case, you should contact East Ridge Dental by dialing (605) 373-0245. Your Invisalign provider will diagnose any problems and can provide solutions like new aligner trays.

Is Invisalign covered by dental insurance?

Invisalign coverage will vary from provider to provider. Some insurance providers may consider Invisalign orthodontics purely cosmetic and refuse to cover it, others may cover a portion or even all of the costs.

You should always contact your insurance provider beforehand and ask them which costs they can help you cover. We’ll also work with you to help you afford the best orthodontic treatment for your unique dental needs. East Ridge Dental offers financing options and an in-office savings plan you may be able to take advantage of.

CariVu

CariVu™ by DEXIS™
CariVu™ – Caries Detection Device

DEXIS™ CariVu™ is a compact, portable caries (cavity) detection device that uses patented transillumination technology to support the identification of tooth decay without the use of traditional X-ray.
What makes CariVu unique?

  • Uses transillumination technology that makes enamel appear transparent while areas of the tooth experiencing decay trap and absorb light
  • Allows the clinician to see through the tooth, exposing its structure and the actual structure of any carious lesions (cavities).
  • CariVu™ images read like familiar X-ray images
  • Uses non-ionizing radiation which is ideal for children, pregnant women, and patients who are X-ray averse

Intraoral Camera

East Ridge Dental can utilize Intraoral Camera technology that helps enhance your understanding of your diagnosis. We can show you images of your dentition at a greater resolution, and exactly what our doctors and hygienists are seeing.

What is an Intraoral Camera?

An Intraoral Camera is a very small camera – in some cases, just a few millimeters long. An Intraoral Camera allows our practitioners to view clear, and precise images of your mouth, teeth, and gums. This allows us to accurately make a diagnosis. With clear, defined, enlarged images, you see details that may be missed by standard mirror examinations. These images are available for our patients to see in high definition on the television screen right in the patient exam room at the time of service.

Intraoral cameras also enable our practice to save your images in our office computer to provide a permanent record of treatments. These images can be printed for you, other specialists, and your lab or insurance companies.

Nitrous Oxide &
Oxygen Sedation

Conquer Dental Anxiety With Nitrous Oxide and Oxygen Sedation

Are you someone who gets anxious or nervous about dental visits? If so, you’re not alone. Many people experience dental anxiety, which can make receiving necessary dental care a challenge. At East Ridge Dental, our Sioux Falls, SD, dentists understand this and offer nitrous oxide and oxygen sedation to help our patients feel more relaxed and comfortable during their procedures.

This conscious sedation approach helps ensure you can receive the dental care you need without the stress and worry often associated with dental visits. Learn more about laughing gas by dialing (605) 373-0245 or reading the helpful guide below.

What Is Nitrous Oxide and Oxygen Sedation?

Nitrous oxide and oxygen sedation, commonly known as “laughing gas,” is a safe and effective way to help patients relax during dental procedures. Nitrous oxide is a mild sedative inhaled through a mask placed over the nose. The mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen creates a calming effect, reducing anxiety and discomfort without putting the patient to sleep.

The sedation is easily adjustable, allowing your East Ridge dentist to control the level of sedation throughout the procedure. Nitrous oxide and oxygen sedation is a form of conscious sedation, so patients remain conscious and can respond to instructions, but feel more at ease and relaxed.

Benefits of Nitrous Oxide and Oxygen Sedation

Effective Anxiety and Stress Relief

Nitrous oxide and oxygen sedation provide effective relief from the anxiety and stress often associated with dental procedures. By inducing a calming effect, laughing gas helps patients better manage pain and feel more at ease throughout their dental treatment.

Enhanced Comfort and Relaxation

Patients undergoing dental procedures experience increased comfort and relaxation with the use of nitrous oxide and oxygen sedation. This state of relaxation can make the experience more tolerable and less daunting for individuals who may otherwise feel nervous or tense.

Rapid Recovery

One of the advantages of using nitrous oxide and oxygen sedation is its quick onset and short duration. After the procedure, the sedative effects of laughing gas wear off rapidly, allowing patients to regain full consciousness and functionality shortly thereafter. This enables them to resume their daily activities without significant delay.

Suitable for All Ages

Nitrous oxide and oxygen sedation is safe and suitable for most patients, including children and adults. This makes laughing gas a versatile option for anxious patients of varying ages, and those who may require lengthy dental procedures or dental treatment.

Convenient Administration and Adjustment

The administration of nitrous oxide and oxygen sedation is relatively straightforward and can be easily adjusted during the procedure to ensure optimal comfort and sedation levels for the patient. This flexibility allows dental professionals to tailor the administered laughing gas to individual patient needs.

Minimal Side Effects and Recovery Time

Compared to other sedation methods, nitrous oxide and oxygen sedation typically have minimal side effects and require little to no recovery time. Patients can generally expect to experience few adverse effects, if any, following a dental procedure done with laughing gas. This further contributes to the appeal of laughing gas as a safe and efficient sedation option.

Who Qualifies for Nitrous Oxide and Oxygen Sedation

You may qualify for nitrous oxide sedation if any of the following apply to you:

  • Individuals with dental anxiety or fear
  • Patients who have difficulty sitting still for extended periods
  • Those with a strong gag reflex or sensitive teeth
  • Individuals undergoing lengthy or complex dental procedures
  • Children who may have difficulty cooperating during dental treatment
  • Patients with special needs or developmental disabilities
  • Individuals with a low pain threshold or sensitivity to pain

Preparing for Nitrous Oxide and Oxygen Sedation

  • Fasting Before the Appointment: Refrain from eating or drinking for at least eight hours before your appointment. This helps prevent nausea or vomiting during the procedure, as your stomach should be relatively empty.
  • Choosing Comfortable Attire: Opt for comfortable, loose-fitting clothing on the day of your appointment. This ensures unrestricted movement and enhances your overall comfort during the procedure.
  • Removing Accessories and Dental Work: Take off any jewelry, including earrings, necklaces, and bracelets, as well as contact lenses and removable dental work like dentures or retainers. This minimizes the risk of discomfort or interference during the laughing gas sedation process.
  • Avoid Alcohol and Tobacco: Refrain from consuming alcohol or using tobacco products in the hours leading up to your appointment. Alcohol and tobacco can interact with the sedative effects of nitrous oxide, potentially causing adverse reactions or complications.

The Nitrous Oxide and Oxygen Sedation Process

Consultation

Before laughing gas sedation, you’ll undergo an initial consultation with one of our East Ridge dentists. During the consultation phase, your East Ridge dentist will review your medical history to ensure you’re a candidate for nitrous oxide and oxygen sedation.

The dentist will take the opportunity to explain the nitrous oxide and oxygen sedation process, giving you a clear understanding of what to expect during your dental treatment. This is also the time for you to express any concerns or questions you may have about the procedure, as well as sedation dentistry with laughing gas.

Preparation

You’ll arrive at our Sioux Falls office for your dental appointment. Before the administration of nitrous oxide and oxygen sedation, a soft and comfortable mask will be placed gently over your nose. You will then breathe nitrous oxide-oxygen in normally through your nose, ensuring the proper delivery of the sedative gasses.

Nitrous Oxide and Oxygen Sedation

Once the preparation is complete, the dentist will gradually introduce the mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen through the mask. As the sedative takes effect, you will notice yourself feeling increasingly relaxed. Throughout the procedure, the dentist will closely monitor your response to the sedation and make any necessary adjustments to ensure your comfort. Since nitrous oxide sedation is a conscious sedation method, you’ll be able to respond to questions and obey instructions.

Recovery

After completing the dental procedure, you’ll be given pure oxygen to breathe in. This helps to flush out any remaining nitrous oxide from your nervous system. Any residual effects of the laughing gas will dissipate quickly, allowing you to leave our Sioux Falls dental office soon after and resume your normal activities with ease under proper supervision.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does the nitrous oxide and oxygen sedation last?

The sedation effects of nitrous oxide and oxygen are temporary and wear off quickly once the gas is discontinued. Most patients feel normal within five to ten minutes after breathing pure oxygen.

Who isn’t a candidate for nitrous oxide sedation?

Nitrous oxide should be avoided if you have chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or if you are pregnant. Additionally, individuals with conditions like emphysema, exotic chest problems, multiple sclerosis (M.S.), or respiratory issues such as a cold should consider not using nitrous oxide. It’s advisable to request a “5-minute trial” from your dentist to gauge your comfort with this sedation method before undergoing any procedure.

Are there any side effects associated with nitrous oxide and oxygen sedation?

Side effects of laughing gas are generally mild and temporary, such as slight nausea, dizziness, or temporary fatigue. These typically resolve quickly once the laughing gas is discontinued.

Does dental insurance cover nitrous oxide and oxygen sedation?

Coverage for nitrous oxide and oxygen sedation can vary depending on your dental insurance plan. Your dental team can assist you in understanding your coverage and any out-of-pocket costs.

Snoring and Sleep Apnea

Effective Snoring & Sleep Apnea Treatment at East Ridge Dental

Some snoring and occasional restlessness is normal. What isn’t normal is constant tossing and turning, waking up gasping for air, and days where you and your loved ones suffer sleep deprivation due to consistent nighttime disruptions. Snoring and sleep apnea are common issues that can range from moderate to severe, possibly causing a wide range of problems for you and those around you.

Unfortunately, issues caused by snoring and sleep apnea tend to get worse the longer they go untreated, why is why prompt treatment is vital. If you’re dealing with problems caused by snoring and sleep apnea, the sleep dentists at East Ridge Dental Care can help by offering effective treatment.

What Is Snoring?

Snoring is a sound created by the vibration of soft tissues in your mouth and throat. When these tissues loosen, it causes the airway to narrow and forces air through the smaller opening. This causes the tissues to flutter, creating sound vibrations in the throat that result in snoring. When the snoring is so loud that it can be heard through walls, it’s referred to as heroic snoring.

What Causes Snoring?

Snoring can happen for various reasons, some of which include:

  • Congestion
  • Being overweight
  • Excessive alcohol consumption
  • Stress
  • Enlarged Tonsils
  • Sleeping on your back

What Is Sleep Apnea?

Sleep apnea is a disorder that causes your body to stop breathing while you sleep. The lack of oxygen jolts you awake, although you may not remember waking up. The process repeats multiple times, consistently disrupting your sleep cycles and lowering your sleep quality.

There are three types of sleep apnea:

  • Central sleep apnea (CSA) occurs when the brain fails to send signals to the body to breathe during sleep.
  • Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is the most common form of sleep apnea, affecting over one billion people worldwide. OSA is caused by the collapsing of airways blocking airflow into the lungs. The harder you try to breathe, the tighter the airway seals. This airway obstruction persists until the brain partially wakes you up.
  • Complex (or mixed) sleep apnea (MSA) is when both obstructive and central sleep apnea occur at once.

Causes of Sleep Apnea

While sleep apnea has similar causes to that of snoring, there are additional reasons you may develop the disorder including:

  • Family history of sleep apnea
  • Brain tumors
  • Jaw misalignment
  • High blood pressure
  • Diabetes

Symptoms of Sleep Apnea

The most common symptom of sleep apnea is loud snoring, which can make it hard to differentiate between the two.

Other common symptoms include:

  • Gasping or choking at night
  • Making quiet vibrations and whistles in your sleep
  • Loud rumbling during sleep
  • Sore throat in the morning
  • Excessive daytime sleepiness
  • Irritability
  • Tossing and turning
  • Problems concentrating

If you’re experiencing any of the symptoms mentioned above, please contact our Sioux Falls office by calling (605) 373-0245 to make an appointment with our sleep dentists.

How Does Snoring and Sleep Apnea Affect You?

Decreased Physical Health

Sleep apnea is about more than losing sleep. Untreated sleep apnea can lead to serious physical health issues such as:

  • Heart disease
  • Liver problems
  • High blood pressure
  • Oral cancer
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Sexual dysfunction
  • Acid reflux
  • Complications with medication and surgery

Decreased Mental Health

Sleep apnea affects your mental health as well, resulting in symptoms such as:

  • Depression
  • Insomnia
  • Memory Loss
  • Poor work performance
  • Decreased cognitive function

Increased Chance of Accident

The decreased cognitive function people with sleep apnea may experience increases the chances of accidents. It’s been proven that people who suffer from obstructive sleep apnea inadvertently cause thousands of traffic fatalities every year.

Damaged Relationships

Sleep disturbances caused by snoring and sleep apnea such as loud noises, tossing and turning, and waking up gasping, can deprive your bed partners of the sleep they need. If your partner is sleep-deprived, it can put a strain on the relationship and separation becomes more likely

Additionally, if your sleep disturbances are especially loud, as they tend to be with heroic snoring, then sleep deprivation may extend to other members of your household. This can mean even further tension in your home as more people struggle to get the quality sleep they need.

For reasons such as the ones listed above, it’s vital to seek out effective treatment for snoring and sleep apnea. The sleep dentists at East Ridge Dental can recommend you to a specialist who can get you diagnosed and afterwards, we can offer effective treatment based on your unique needs.

Treatment For Snoring And Sleep Apnea

CPAP

CPAP or continuous positive airway pressure is the first treatment recommended for snoring and sleep apnea. CPAP is a machine that continuously delivers air pressure into your airway through a mask. You wear the mask while you sleep so the air pressure can open your airway, allowing you to breathe easier and helping to alleviate symptoms of snoring and sleep apnea.

While CPAP can be highly effective, many patients find the treatment uncomfortable and disruptive. Patients may end up taking off their mask while they sleep, or simply stop wearing it because of the noise. If you find CPAP to be too disruptive, we offer an alternative.

Oral Appliance Therapy

Oral appliance therapy is a custom-made mouthpiece you wear while you sleep. The mouthpiece repositions your jaw, preventing the soft tissues in your mouth and throat from collapsing into the back of your throat. This helps your airways stay open, so you can breathe properly, preventing symptoms of snoring and sleep apnea.

Patients tend to prefer oral appliance therapy because the device is quiet, discreet, and comfortable. Oral appliance therapy can help you sleep in comfortable positions and doesn’t make any noises that may disturb you or your partners. Additionally, your oral appliance will be small enough to easily take anywhere you go, so you never have to miss out on your treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

If I snore, do I have sleep apnea?

Snoring is a common sign of sleep apnea, but it doesn’t always mean you have that particular sleep disorder. Our Sioux Falls dentists help you figure out if your snoring is a symptom of sleep apnea by recommending you to a sleep specialist for a sleep study. During a sleep study, a machine will record your vitals while you sleep and the data will later be analyzed.

Do snoring and sleep apnea go away on their own?

Chronic loud snoring and sleep apnea are conditions that aren’t likely to go away on their own. This is especially true for sleep apnea, because it causes a cycle of worsening symptoms like obesity, that worsen the disorder.

The best way to treat loud snoring and sleep apnea is to seek professional treatment. If you’re dealing with loud snoring and/or possible signs of sleep apnea, please contact our Sioux Falls office by dialing (605) 373-0245.

Are there home remedies for snoring and sleep apnea?

While professional treatment is the best way to treat snoring or sleep apnea, there are some steps you can take at home that may be able to help you better control your symptoms.

Our sleep dentists recommend trying the following methods to help control snoring and sleep apnea at home:

  • Talk to a doctor/nutritionist about healthy diet and exercise options
  • Sleep on your side
  • Ask your primary care provider if you can take decongestants
  • Try throat exercises
  • Replace your mattress if it’s over ten years old
  • Avoid alcohol, caffeine, and tobacco products, especially before bed
  • Avoid napping during the day

Is sleep apnea life-threatening?

Sleep apnea on its own isn’t usually life-threatening. However, untreated sleep apnea can often lead to serious health issues, which can lower your quality of life and your life expectancy. That’s why it’s important to seek effective treatment for sleep apnea as soon as possible.

What is Restorative Dentistry?

Restorative dentistry refers to a specialized branch of dental care focused on repairing and restoring the functionality and appearance of teeth and their supporting structures, that have been damaged, decayed, or lost. Restorative dental treatments encompass a variety of procedures designed to address oral health issues, aiming not only to improve tooth aesthetics but also to enhance overall oral function and comfort.

Benefits of Restorative Dentistry

Restorative dentistry offers many benefits, some of which include the following:

  • Improved Oral Function: Restorative dentistry procedures aim to restore the proper functioning of your teeth, allowing for better chewing, speaking, and overall oral comfort.
  • Enhanced Aesthetics: Whether through dental fillings, crowns, or implants, restorative dentistry aims to improve the appearance of your smile, boosting confidence and self-esteem.
  • Prevention of Further Damage: Addressing dental issues promptly through restorative procedures prevents the progression of decay or damage, ultimately saving teeth from potential loss.
  • Preservation of Natural Teeth: Many restorative treatments focus on preserving and strengthening natural teeth, promoting longevity, and avoiding unnecessary extractions.
  • Customized Solutions: Restorative dentistry offers personalized solutions tailored to individual needs, ensuring effective and long-lasting results.

Restorative Dentistry Services

Dental Fillings

Dental fillings are a common restorative procedure to treat cavities caused by decay. East Ridge Dental offers silver and tooth-colored composite fillings, providing a durable solution to restore the strength and function of your natural tooth.

Crowns

Crowns, or dental caps, are used to cover and protect damaged or weakened teeth. Customized to match your natural teeth, crowns at East Ridge Dental restore both the appearance and strength of compromised teeth.

Root Canals

Root canals are a procedure performed to address infections or inflammation within the tooth’s pulp. This restorative procedure involves removing the infected tissue, cleaning, and sealing the tooth structure with a root canal treatment to save the tooth from extraction.

Tooth Extractions

In cases of severe decay, trauma, or overcrowding, tooth extractions may be necessary. East Ridge Dental ensures a comfortable and professional environment for tooth extractions, with options for replacement if needed.

Bridges

Dental bridges fill the gap created by missing teeth. Custom-made crowns anchor the dental bridge to adjacent teeth or implants, restoring your smile’s aesthetics and preventing potential dental issues caused by tooth loss.

Dentures & Partials

Dentures and partial dentures are removable appliances designed to replace damaged or missing teeth. East Ridge Dental offers personalized solutions, ensuring a comfortable fit and natural-looking results.

Implant Supported Dentures

Implant-supported dentures provide increased stability and functionality. By anchoring dentures to dental implants, patients can enjoy the benefits of a secure and comfortable tooth replacement option.

Dental Implants

Dental implants are titanium posts surgically placed in the jawbone to serve as artificial tooth roots. These titanium roots are topped with restorations such as a dental crown or a bridge, which mimic the appearance of the natural tooth or teeth that were lost. The dentists at East Ridge Dental are skilled in the placement of dental implants, providing a permanent and reliable solution for single or multiple missing teeth.

Frequently Asked Questions

How soon should I seek restorative dental care after noticing an issue?

It’s advisable to have patients seek restorative dental care promptly. Delaying treatment for issues like cavities or damaged teeth may lead to more extensive problems, making the restoration process more complex.

Can restorative dentistry address issues caused by natural aging?

Yes, restorative dentistry can address age-related dental concerns, such as worn enamel, tooth decay, or tooth loss. Procedures like crowns, bridges, and dental implants can rejuvenate, enhance the appearance of, and restore full function to aging teeth.

Is restorative dentistry only for adults, or can children benefit as well?

Restorative dentistry is applicable to all age groups. Children may benefit from treatments like dental fillings for cavities, dental crowns for damaged baby teeth, and other treatments for promoting healthy oral development.

How long can I expect restorative dental work to last, and are there ways to prolong its longevity?

The longevity of restorative procedures and dental work varies based on factors like oral hygiene, lifestyle, and the specific dental procedure used. Practicing good oral care, attending regular check-ups, and avoiding habits like teeth grinding can contribute to the longevity of restorative treatments.

Smile Savings Plan

At East Ridge Dental, we believe in a patient-centered approach to quality, affordable dentistry. Our business office works with patients to help them make the financial arrangements necessary to invest in the health of their smile.

Our “Smile Savings Plan” is not dental insurance… It’s better! This is an annual reduced-fee savings plan for individuals and families who value their dental health. There are no waiting periods, no deductibles, and no yearly maximums. Plan members enjoy the benefits of the plan immediately upon registration and payment. Our “Smile Savings Plan” is administered by our office independently, meaning we do not use a third-party administrator. We handle everything for you, so you will always have a personal contact for plan questions and information.

Our patient’s dental health is our number one priority, and unfortunately, with dental insurance limitations we are starting to see shrinking benefits, excessive pre-authorization requirements, and decreased reimbursement in all areas, causing more treatment denials. With our “Smile Savings Plan,” you will receive twice-yearly cleanings and exams, necessary x-rays, and more. These regular check-ups will give us the opportunity to address any concerns early on, resulting in less complex and less expensive treatment.

Enjoy The Gold Standard in Smile Restoration

At East Ridge Dental, we understand how important your smile is to you. There are many restorations available, but only dental implants can restore and maintain your smile for life. Dental implants are the gold standard in smile restoration, offering a permanent solution to missing teeth. Our Sioux Falls implant dentists invite you to learn more about the benefits of dental implants and how they can help you regain your confidence and oral health.

What are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are artificial tooth roots surgically placed into the jawbone. They provide a permanent foundation for replacement teeth, such as crowns, bridges, or dentures. Implants are made of biocompatible materials, such as titanium, that fuse with the jawbone over time, creating a stable and durable base for replacement teeth.

The Different Types of Dental Implants

There are different types of dental implants, including:

Single Implants

Singular implants replace one missing tooth. A dental crown is attached to the implant, creating a natural-looking replacement tooth.

Implant-Supported Dentures

Implant-supported dentures replace multiple missing teeth or a full arch of teeth. The denture is attached to multiple implants, creating a stable and secure fit.

Implant-Supported Bridges

Implant-supported bridges replace multiple missing teeth adjacent to each other. The bridge is attached to two or more implants, creating a stable and natural-looking replacement for missing teeth.

The Benefits of Dental Implants

Dental implants offer several benefits over other tooth replacement options, such as dentures or bridges. Some of the benefits include:

  • Improved Appearance: Dental implants look and feel like natural teeth, providing a more natural-looking and aesthetically pleasing smile.
  • Improved Comfort: Unlike dentures, dental implants are permanently fixed in place and don’t require adhesives. This can improve comfort and make it easier to eat and speak.
  • Improved Oral Health: Dental implants help maintain the structure of the jawbone and prevent bone loss, which can occur when teeth are missing. They also don’t require the removal of healthy tooth structure, as is necessary with a bridge.
  • Improved Durability: Dental implants are designed to last a lifetime with proper care and maintenance.

The Dental Implants Process

At East Ridge Dental, we offer a comprehensive dental implant process that includes:

Initial Consultation

During your initial consultation, your Sioux Falls implant dentist will evaluate your oral health and determine if dental implants are the right option for you. We’ll also discuss the different types of dental implants and answer any questions you may have. If you’re feeling nervous about the prospect of implant placement, sedation dentistry is available to help you feel calm and relaxed during the procedure.

Designing Your Implants

If dental implants are the right option for you, we’ll take images and impressions of your mouth to design custom implants that fit your unique needs.

Preparation

Before installing your dental implants, extraction may be necessary for certain teeth. If you’re lacking jawbone density or gum tissue mass, supplemental procedures like bone grafting and gum grafting can help restore missing tissue before your implants are placed.

Installing Your Dental Implants

Your implant dentist will make incisions in the gums to access the jawbone. Once the preparation is complete, we’ll surgically place the implants into your jawbone. The implants will fuse with the bone in a process called osseointegration, creating a stable and permanent foundation for your replacement teeth.

Caring for Your Implants

To get the most out of your new custom-made implant restorations, be sure to follow these steps and any steps given to you by your implant dentist.

  1. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and non-abrasive toothpaste to brush your implants twice a day.
  2. Floss around your implants at least once a day, using floss specifically designed for implants or a water flosser.
  3. Consider using an antimicrobial mouthwash to help reduce bacteria in your mouth.
  4. Quit smoking or using any tobacco products, as this can increase the risk of implant failure.
  5. Wear a nightguard if you grind your teeth at night, as this can cause damage to your implants.
  6. Inform your East Ridge implant dentist if you experience any pain, swelling, or other unusual symptoms around your implants. Early detection of any issues can help prevent further complications.

By following these care tips and maintaining good oral hygiene, you can help ensure the long-term success of your dental implants. At East Ridge Dental, we’re here to support you every step of the way and provide any additional guidance or recommendations you may need.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are dental implants painful?

The dental implant process is typically done under local anesthesia, so you shouldn’t feel any pain during the procedure. Some discomfort and swelling may occur afterward, but these symptoms can be managed with over-the-counter pain medication.

How long do dental implants last?

Dental implants are designed to last a lifetime with proper care and maintenance. Regular dental visits, good oral hygiene, and avoiding bad habits, such as smoking, can help ensure the longevity of your implants.

Are dental implants covered by insurance?

Dental insurance coverage for implants varies by provider and policy. Our team at East Ridge Dental can help you understand your insurance coverage and financing options for dental implants.

Can I get dental implants if I have gum disease?

Patients with gum disease may still be eligible for dental implants, but it will depend on the severity of their condition. Our team will evaluate your oral health and determine the best course of treatment for you. In some cases, treatment for gum disease may be necessary before proceeding with dental implant placement.
